South Wales Guide

South Wales cottages with hot tubs offer a perfect base for exploring this stunning region. From the wild Pembrokeshire coastline to the dramatic Brecon Beacons, you'll find properties ranging from cosy hideaways for couples to large group accommodation sleeping 20+.

The area boasts some of Wales' top attractions including St Fagans National Museum of History (4.7/5 on TripAdvisor) and the impressive Caerphilly Castle (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor). Many cottages sit within easy reach of award-winning beaches and mountain trails.

Catherine Zeta-Jones, who grew up in Swansea, still returns to South Wales regularly. The Oscar-winning actress has been spotted holidaying in luxury cottages along the Gower Peninsula, an area she's described as "breathtaking".

Cottage stays offer far more space and freedom than hotels. Many properties welcome dogs, feature private gardens and that all-important hot tub - perfect for stargazing with a glass of wine after a day's walking.

Sightseeing

South Wales packs in more sights than you'd think possible. The Gower Peninsula was Britain's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and I still think it's one of the best. Rhossili Bay (SA3 1PR) consistently ranks among Europe's top beaches - TripAdvisor users give it 4.8/5.

Cardiff Castle (CF10 3RB) sits right in the city centre. It's open 9am-5pm daily and scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor. The guided tour is worth the extra few quid as you'll learn about the eccentric Victorian owner who spent a fortune on the place.

We recommend Caerleon Roman Fortress (NP18 1AE) for history fans. The amphitheatre and baths are free to visit and open daily. Kids love it and TripAdvisor users rate it 4.6/5.

Don't miss the Big Pit National Coal Museum (NP4 9XP) in Blaenavon. Former miners take you 300 feet underground for free. It's open 9:30am-5pm and scores an impressive 4.8/5 on TripAdvisor. The hot tub will feel extra good after climbing back up!

Pet Friendly

South Wales is brilliant for dogs. Many beaches welcome pets year-round including Ogmore-by-Sea and Southerndown. From October to April, nearly all beaches lift their summer restrictions.

We've found The Plough & Harrow in Monknash (CF71 7QQ) to be one of the best dog-friendly pubs. They provide water bowls, treats and dogs are welcome throughout. Their Sunday roast is fantastic too.

Clyne Gardens in Swansea (SA3 5BW) offers 50 acres of woodland paths and open spaces where dogs can run free. The rhododendrons in May are spectacular.

Most cottages with hot tubs in South Wales provide dog beds, bowls and even treats. Just check if there are rules about dogs using furniture or being left alone. And obviously keep them out of the hot tub!

Top 3 attractions you have to see in South Wales

Brecon Beacons National Park (LD3 8ER) is unmissable. Pen y Fan is the highest peak at 886m and the views are worth every step. The Four Waterfalls Walk near Ystradfellte takes you behind a curtain of water at Sgwd yr Eira. A visitor told me: "We saw red kites circling overhead and wild ponies on the hills. The kids rated it better than Disney!"

The Mumbles (SA3 4DS) combines a Victorian pier, lighthouse and castle ruins with great ice cream shops. Verdi's gets my vote for the best gelato in Wales. Joe's Ice Cream is a local institution too. One family wrote: "We walked along the coastal path then rewarded ourselves with ice cream. Perfect day out that cost almost nothing."

St Fagans National Museum of History (CF5 6XB) showcases over 40 original buildings from different periods of Welsh history that have been rebuilt in the grounds. It's free to enter and open 10am-5pm daily. The bakery sells traditional Welsh cakes cooked on a griddle. A recent visitor commented: "I expected to stay an hour but spent the whole day here. The houses are fascinating and staff know everything about them."

When is the best time to visit South Wales?

May to September offers the warmest weather, but April and October can be lovely with fewer crowds. Winter brings its own charm with empty beaches and cosy pubs with roaring fires. Plus your hot tub feels even better when it's chilly outside!

Do I need a car in South Wales?

While trains serve major towns and cities, a car gives you freedom to explore remote beaches and mountain areas. Many cottages are in rural locations with limited public transport.

What's the weather like?

South Wales is warmer than North Wales but still gets plenty of rain. The coastal areas are milder than inland. Always pack waterproofs regardless of season - we've had downpours in August and glorious sunshine in October.

Are there good restaurants in South Wales?

Yes! The Walnut Tree near Abergavenny holds a Michelin star. For seafood, try The Shed in Porthgain. Cardiff has everything from street food to fine dining. Many pubs serve excellent food using local ingredients.

Can I go surfing in South Wales?

Absolutely. Rest Bay in Porthcawl and Llangennith on Gower are surfing hotspots. Several schools offer lessons for beginners. The hot tub at your cottage is perfect for soothing muscles after a day catching waves.

What should I pack for a South Wales cottage holiday?

Walking boots, swimwear (for both sea and hot tub!) and layers for changeable weather. Binoculars are useful for wildlife spotting and don't forget towels unless your cottage provides them.
